Elegance Lost and Found: Reflections on Efficient Computing
I still remember the quiet confidence of computers in the 1980s. In many offices, especially in technical and academic environments, Unix-based machines simply ran. They were not flashy, and they did not beg for attention, but they were stable, predictable, and elegant. You logged in, did your work, logged out, and trusted that the system would still be there tomorrow, unchanged and unperturbed. Compared to what came later, these machines felt grown-up. They were designed to serve work rather than demand maintenance, and that difference left a lasting impression on me.
At the same time, on the personal computing side, machines like the Atari ST and the Amiga demonstrated that efficiency and usability were not limited to expensive workstations. Even as office computers, they were remarkably capable. I vividly remember how natural it felt to insert a single 3.5-inch floppy disk, power on the machine, and immediately start writing a document or working in a spreadsheet. There was no sense of ceremony, no prolonged installation ritual, and no dependency on layers of configuration. The computer felt like an appliance in the best sense of the word: a tool that existed to be used.
Years later, this memory became even sharper when contrasted with the Windows-based PCs that took over offices and homes. Installing something as mundane as Microsoft Word often meant feeding the machine a stack of floppy disks, hoping that nothing would fail midway through the process. The hardware was objectively more powerful, yet the experience was slower, heavier, and oddly fragile. It was hard not to notice the irony: more resources, more complexity, and less immediacy. Progress, at least from the user’s point of view, did not feel linear.
That feeling returned with full force in 1997, when I encountered the Casablanca video editing system in a video club in Munich. I was genuinely astonished. At a time when I was constantly upgrading PC hardware to coax acceptable non-linear editing performance out of Windows-based systems, this dedicated machine delivered real-time responsiveness with what appeared to be modest resources. Under the hood, it relied on a Motorola 68040 or 68060 processor, a lineage many former Amiga and Atari users already considered obsolete. And yet, in practice, Casablanca ran circles around contemporary PC solutions.
What struck me was not just its performance, but its philosophy. Casablanca felt like the logical continuation of ideas that had once defined the Amiga and Atari worlds: tight integration between hardware and software, a clear focus on the task at hand, and an operating environment that stayed out of the way. There was no sense of fighting the machine. You interacted with it, and it responded immediately. In that moment, it became painfully obvious how inefficient x86 processors combined with Windows had been, not because the hardware was inherently bad, but because the overall system design had lost its sense of purpose.
Looking back, it is hard not to think that if platforms like Amiga or Atari had been properly developed and allowed to evolve, personal computing might have taken a very different path. These systems already treated multimedia, interactivity, and responsiveness as first-class citizens. A gradual transition to newer processors, combined with the same architectural discipline, could have led to personal computers that were far more efficient, quieter, and more humane much earlier than what we eventually got. Instead, the industry chose compatibility, scale, and market dominance over elegance.
The great irony is that many of the principles that once defined Unix workstations, Amiga, Atari, and later Casablanca never truly disappeared. They retreated into niches: servers, embedded systems, professional appliances. Today, with modern ARM-based systems and highly integrated system-on-a-chip designs, these ideas are quietly returning. When a contemporary machine feels fast not because it is loud and power-hungry, but because it is responsive and balanced, I recognize the same qualities that impressed me decades ago.
In that sense, my experience with Casablanca in 1997 was not just a glimpse of an alternative past, but also a preview of a future that took a long time to arrive. It reinforced a lesson that still feels relevant today: true progress in computing is not measured in clock speeds or benchmarks, but in how effortlessly a system lets you think and work.
